New York, I Love You!

Hey everyone!

In the beginning of the year, I told myself that I want to be more spontaneous this year and try new things. In January, while I was in my performance studies class, I was randomly looking up plane tickets when I felt the urge to book some. So I did. I decided I wanted to spend my whole spring break in New York. I messaged my cousin if I could crash with her, and when she said she was gonna be in town, nothing held me back.

A week before finals week, my friends asked if we could plan things to do during spring break. I somehow kind of forgot about my trip until I looked at my calendar and remembered that I was leaving that Sunday. When Sunday came around, I hopped on a plane and prepared myself for a week of adventure.

I'm just going to let the picture tell you what I did while I was there... here you go!

I want to say a HUGE thank you to my cousin, Carol, and her friend, Erika, for letting me stay with them. Shout out to my cousin Amy who went on random adventures. Thank you to the random strangers that took pictures of me on my first day in New York since I spent the day alone running around wherever my feet and intuition led me.

Here are a few of my personal favorites of NY:
  • The view from the Empire State Building
  • Chelsea, NY - Chelsea Market, the Highline
  • Bibble and Sip on 51st & 8th Ave
  • Kahve on 52nd & 9th
  • Anything on Bedford Ave = Williamsburg area - Artist & Fleas, any restaurant/cafe
  • Il Forno in Hell's Kitchen (try the mushroom risotto, it's delicious!)
  • Washington Square Park - anyone who performs is worth watching/listening to = you just might see my cousin busking
  • Union Square stop - get out the subway, go upstairs and take in everyone connecting to different trains. It's a beautiful scene

The week I spent in New York, I learned a few things:

  • I can read a map, well, a subway map at least
  • I'm bad at following my own plans because I end up going wherever my gut tells me
  • I can walk, but I didn't know I could walk over 20 blocks and still consider it easy
  • How to walk fast so people don't shove you
  • How to swipe a metro card at the right speed
  • How to run to catch a train
  • New Yorkers taught me how to cross the street without waiting for the walk light to tell me when to cross
  • How to look on both sides of the street to let you know when to walk (if there are no cars or if they are all stopped, you can cross)
  • If there's smoke coming out of the ground, stay away from it... or else you'll end up smelling like garbage
  • It's very important to read and remember the street signs- for example, don't expect a 6th ave cause the street is called Ave of the Americas or how the street, Broadway, cuts diagonally between avenues
  • Read the subway headings so you don't go uptown when your you're supposed to go downtown, or that you don't get on the wrong train
  • There are men who actually dress well
  • Go all out and do the whole 3 tapas experience at the Spot Dessert Bar, you won't regret it
  • Find beauty even when there's a million people around you and trash everywhere
  • I learned how function after 4 hours of sleep every night, for a whole week straight
  • The hustle and bustle is worth it, you can do more things throughout that day

Since I'll be graduating college in June, this was my last Spring Break. Thank you New York for an incredible time. Can't wait to go back!!
